Buddy Fruits | If It Says All Natural, Is It?

2013 January 9

Let me set the scene…

I’m at WalMart (pretty much all stores in my town end with—mart). Last minute New Year’s Eve items for desserts, cheeseball…  you know the drill. Only I forgot to eat breakfast.
—Don’t ask.  It’s a mom-curse.

Oh well, I’ll buy something at Wally’s and call it breakfast. Here’s what I end up buying:

Healthy, eh? Right there on the front: “100% FRUITS, Nothing else!” Exclamation point and everything. (I’m hungry here folks! Quick and easy is my goal.) I found them in the produce section. Probably like the freeze-dried fruit pouches I’ve tried before?

The Raspberry pouch first. STRONG flavor, and not freeze dried, it’s filled with little gelled fruit snacks. Not really gummy in texture. And denser than kiddie fruit snacks. Seriously Yummy.

BREAKFAST is SERVED.  I ate the whole thing.

Then I opened the Pomegranate and Acai pouch. — Even stronger flavor, just as yummy. It says one serving of fruit per pouch, I think I deserved 2 servings (I missed breakfast after all?).  Each pouch is 95 calories.

Washed it down with a Diet Mountain Dew. I’m a champion that way.

Ingredients for the Pomegranate and Acai lists:

  • Fruit extract (any fruit I wonder?)
  • Apple juice concentrate
  • Apple puree concentrate
  • Grenade juice concentrate, (um? What is Grenade juice?)
  • Lemon juice concentrate
  • Fruit pectin
  • Natural flavor
  • Glazing agent.

Did you miss it? Yeah me too? Unless Grenade juice has BOTH Pomegranate AND Acai in it… where exactly are the main ingredients? Oh. Turns out Grenade juice IS pomegranate, so there. (Thanks Google.)

But the Acai is still a mystery. It could be hiding in the coy ‘Fruit extract’ mentioned at first? I’m refusing to ask about the Glazing agent.  I’m sure it’s ALL NATURAL cuz the front of the package SAYS SO.

I’m not all that annoyed by the strange ingredient list, but when you scream out all natural, 100% healthy on the front… I REALLY want to believe you. No worries, I’ll happily eat Glazing-Fruit-Extract on a hungry WalMart foraging fest.

Bottom line: Thumbs Up, Would Buy Again.

Huh! Sounds good to me, even if ‘acai’ is mysteriously missing. I don’t even know what an acai is anyway! I’ll check em out!

Acai is that really expensive juice you see in the orange juice aisle they say it’s a super fruit, maybe from somewhere in southeast asia??
It’s super sour. Lots of antioxidants etc.. but far as I can tell NOT in that pouch. 🙂

Sadly, corporations will lie about anything.

That glazing agent is a little frightening, but let’s just assume that it’s syrupy sugar kind of thing that makes the product look more appetizing. Go with that.

95 calories is too many as per such a tiny portion.
