Easy (And Fast) Taco Pie For Dinner

Time for a little Taco Fiesta For Dinner Tonight!

I have to give credit to my mother-in-law. She introduced this meal to me 20 years ago. And now my kids demand that SHE make it every time she is visiting us!

This meal is super easy and kind of an all in one plate of a meal.

First open a can of crescent roll dough and spread it out in a 9×13 pan. Bake the crescent dough at 375 degrees for 7-10 minutes, till starting to rise a bit but not too browned.

At the same time brown 1 to 1.5 lbs of hamburger (I always chop up half an onion in small pieces and cook with the hamburger). Drain the cooked hamburger.

Once the crescent roll is just starting to brown take it out but leave the oven on. Spread the cooked hamburger & onions evenly over the rolls and then take about half of a small regular Velveeta and half of a Mexican Velveeta and slice and spread over the hamburger. The Mexican Velveeta is a bit too spicy for my kids that’s why I alternate with the regular. But if you like it —go ALL Mexican on your Taco Pie! I dare you. (If Velveeta is just not your thing, shredded cheese will work… but try the Velveeta you might be surprised? I was!)

In the photo above, see how the slices are layered over the meat? Once it’s all assembled put it back into the hot oven for 5 minutes or until the cheese is melted.

That’s pretty much IT.

Now it’s time for the good stuff! The Toppings!

Cut a slice of Taco Pie and place in the center of a LARGE plate.

Then add everything you love about Tacos on top! Shredded lettuce, tomatoes, jalapeños, shredded carrots, green peppers… GO BIG OR GO HOME. Basically make a giant salad and put it on top of the pie.

Last… we like to top our Taco Pie – Turned Taco Salad at this point—with Spicy Ranch, salsa, and a dollop of sour cream. Ole!

Shopping List

TACO PIE:

  • 1-1.5 lbs ground hamburger, browned in a nonstick large saute pan
  • Crescent Rolls (Pillsbury are the best but I think Walmarts are fine, I tried Target brand and they were terrible though!)
  • 1 Small package of Velveeta (or two small packages different flavors—regular and Mexican)
  • ½ onion chopped small (optional) — or if in a hurry just use dried onion flakes!

TOPPING IDEAS:

  • Shredded Lettuce
  • Chopped Tomatoes
  • Shredded Carrots
  • Chopped Green Peppers
  • Diced Jalapeños
  • Anything else you LOVE on Tacos!
  • Spicy Ranch (Hidden Valley brand, most stores carry it, cheapest at Walmart, I stock up)
  • Salsa and Sour Cream
