HOO-RAY!!

It’s taken me several months but here I am. WordPress UP, yo.

And now I am super busy learning everything I can about WordPress and my Theme (Vigilance). Wow, I feel like a 3rd grader attempting to learn calculus.

“Sorry Miss Ashley, how do I locate the CSS file again via my FTP client? I can’t remember where my pink crayon is….”

I’m gonna need a lot of help. So if you already invented the WordPress wheel… will you please share a spoke or two?

Thanks.

Carissa – It looks great! Welcome to the WordPress pool – the water’s fine. I’d love to hear about your process – was the conversion from Blogger (or was it typepad) difficult? BTW – I love the image you found – it’s perfect!

I’ve been a WordPress.org girl from the beginning. You know I love what you do, feel free to give me a call next week and I’ll be glad to help. You know, make sure you have the most useful plugins, share shortcuts etc. I’ll be glad to answer questions; you’ve helped me with plenty of mom blogger questions/connections.

I had not idea that in your former life you were a molecular biologist; my brother is a plant geneticist.

Oh – I just read your post about the change-over and wanted to share one thing – too late for you, but it might help your readers –

Godaddy.com is not only one place you can buy your own domain name from, but you can also buy hosting from them (along with many other places – just be sure they meet the requirements of the http://www.WordPress.org software). Now – the COOL thing at this point in time Feb. 2010 – Godaddy recently launched a “wordpress hosting.” That is a specific package that comes with the WordPress.org Software ALREADY LOADED onto your site – at no extra cost – that’s even easier than their one button WordPress installation. You still have to select a free or paid/premium theme to style your blog – but the wordpress installation is one of the most intimidating parts for many non-tech types – no FTP needed!

Carissa, welcome to the world of self-hosting WordPress! Duong Sheahan sent me over to see your new site. Looks fantastic!

WordPress takes a little while to get used to, but I’m sure you love it!

Here’s me sharing a spoke or two:

A book I highly recommend reading is WordPress for Business Bloggers by Paul Thewlis.

And be sure you make regular backups of your database & essentials directories/files, keep your WordPress installation and plugins up-to-date with the latest stable version, and do your best to secure your FTP, hosting, database and wp-admin account. Being prepared and prevention is key. You don’t want to start all over or reconstruct anything.

Check out this automatic WordPress backup plugin that integrates with Amazon S3 – http://www.webdesigncompany.net/automatic-wordpress-backup/

Good luck with your site! Let me know if you need any help.

    Take care,
