A Bacon Tale
I love bacon. Who doesn’t?
I do NOT love cooking bacon. Who does?
I recently had to cook a colossal amount of the crispy stuff for my daughter’s band fundraiser…
A POTATO bake sale.
I checked first to see what Google Thinks about cooking gigantic gobs of bacon.
Here’s what Google Thinks…
- Using the Grill
- In the oven with a cooling rack over a pan
- In the oven but starting cold
- In the oven but starting pre-heated
- And finally Make Your Own Bacon… huh??
Here’s how I ended up doing it.
Foil line a jelly roll pan, place bacon directly on pan.
Preheat oven to 375°F.
Bake for approximately 25 minutes, timing for 10 minutes and checking.
I did turn the pieces over about half-way through though most of those sites say you don’t need to.
Once they were the crispness I wanted (extra crispy as I needed crumbled bacon) I let the pan tilt for a few minutes and then poured the grease into a jar.
By the end of three pans of bacon I literally FILLED a 16oz pickle jar with bacon grease.
YUM.
Let’s just say my hair and clothing smelled of red neck parfume. I mentioned my bacon-ess on Twitter and several mentioned how happy my man was going to be with my new sexy scent. And one person on Facebook mis-understood when I mentioned that my kids asked me why I smelled like bacon in the car… she asked: “Why did you have a pickle jar of bacon grease in the car?” I laughed at that one…
NO.
I SMELLED LIKE THE BACON GREASE!
I may never eat bacon again. Okay I lie. The next time SOMEONE else makes it? I’ll eat it!
For fun, Google also thinks about weird stuff with bacon
- Or the Ambitious…100 ways to use bacon
- I first heard about ‘Chacon’ from Kristina Pulsipher.. (self-proclaimed bacon authority apparently).
I first tasted Chacon at a friend’s house 2 Christmases ago.. it was yummy btw.
- And this one’s NOT bacon but it’s still weird:
Hot dog Twinkie sandwich. I’m not kidding.
Add bacon and it would be bacon related eh?
- And from this one I quote:
“Bacon caramel like a chewy SKOR Bar with bacon. How much more of a comforting flavor combination could there ever be?”
Can’t really go wrong if you label it in the dessert/candy section of your site eh??
Short follow up on the potato bar band fundraiser:
…last night the good news is there was a giant long line of Band families happy to purchase their potato bar-fundraiser style. They raised nearly $1,000 (wow huh)? The bad news… there was a giant long line of Band families happy to purchase their potato bar-fundraiser style…and we were at the back of that giant line and DID NOT GET any of the BACON! Plenty of fake-O bits for us though, Thanks.

After all that you didn’t get any real bacon??? Well that stinks!
A few years ago Jon’s brother gave him 10 pounds of bacon for his birthday. Best present ever…although making it DID get annoying.
I think that scent would be quite popular with a lot of people around here. haha
I don’t like cooking bacon on the stove either. It’s scary! I’ll have to try the cookie sheet idea.

Who knew pictures of bacon could be so cool?!?!
Great that so much money was raised!
I totally agree. Bacon is yummy to eat but a pain to make! That jar of bacon grease is gross! I just scraped out a pan-full of hardened sausage grease into my garbage tonight. Eww. Almost makes me never want to eat it again. Almost. But not really.
Congrats on raising so much!

I totally love bacon. I mean really. I mean bacon makes everything (almost) better, though I can’t bring myself to eat bacon ice cream.
Hope you are well!

People come to my house and tell me it smells like bacon.
It’s pretty sad that I don’t notice it any more — I think it’s time for Spring cleaning….
Twitter:
yummmmmmm bacon, but I don’t really like to smell like it.
Funny things you found about bacon on google
Such a bummer that you didn’t get any
That is how i ALWAYS cook bacon (in the oven) and yes, i stink of bacon for HOURS. LOL
With my family, it would be ridiculous to try to do it in a pan….

I think my husband’s favorite sandwich element is bacon. He’d probably have it all these ways if I didn’t cringe at how much he already eats!
Congratulations on the success of your fundraiser!
I agree too that is a pain. I used to work at a fast food place in high school and I always hated cooking the bacon. We used to lay it out on the grill and cook away. I smelled like it for weeks. No wonder I hate cooking it now.

Great photo story! It’s a bit like that in our house every time we cook tea – if it involves bacon!!
I love your photos. So crisp! Bacon is a favorite of mine and I am craving it so badly now!
Dude…bacon. I burned our last batch. But, yummy, delicious bacon. BTW, don’t buy the reduced sodium. It needs the salt.
Something that helps a little with the grease? I put a small cookie rack thingy (I don’t bake) for cooling cookies on top of the foil..so the bacon doesn’t cook in the grease.

I love that everyone has something to share about Bacon.. It’s like apple pie, totally american.
It’s a fact that bacon always tastes better cooked by someone else. Seriously, the science is in.
Well, that looks like too much work to me. I’m sure glad I can’t eat bacon anymore if I had to go through all that! Sheesh! Give me sausage any day! Have a nice weekend.
How appropriate that I read this After I finished re-seasoning 8 cast iron pans with…. bacon. That’s what my hubby said I needed to use (he’s from the South (LA) and grew up with cast iron cooking, I’m from SoCal where we had Teflon.
After watching him and the boys come into the kitchen, grab some bacon and leave, I think it was a trick to get me to cook bacon. Hmmm

ROFL! This post is a trip.
I cook bacon in the oven too and it does drive me a bit crazy that the house smells like a diner for a couple days.
That Twinkie hot dog was CRAZY!! Oh my!! Who would have ever thunk that one up!!LOL
