Kitchen Remodel Anyone??

by Carissa

I have a little story.
We have been basically insane the past 3 months.

And here’s why…
We bought a new house! (Well… new to us.. it was built in 1979.)

Here’s where you come in.
HELP! My first priority is to rip the Moose off the kitchen backsplash and exchange it for…
something…

but
what?

(The cabinets are Figured Maple.)

And while we are in moving Hell,  right now I gotta run.

I am SO planning to share way too much about our new house real soon. For now… please!
FOCUS on a backsplash for me!!!

How funny….I’m right below you on the WW and my WW is about my nasty kitchen that we are remodeling!

As for your moose issue. I would replace it with a newer tile. I might look for something that isn’t in the same brown tone to kind of make that area stand out and pop!

Good luck. I’m replacing my entire kitchen and it is sooooo over whelming!

Oooo, friends of ours just bought a house and had a similar dilemma. They ended up finding tiny little tiles, some dark, some light and some a brushed metal look, and creating a very pretty mosaic above the sink, then a nice pattern in the larger areas like the corner you showed at first. It helped to pull things together, while lightening the feel and bringin in some modern.

So, the countertops are pretty! Not sure about those edges with the gold in them, but everything looks like it’s really clean and in excellent shape.

What about those cabinets? OMG! They are soooo 70’s, but kinda cool too!

Congrats CONGRATS!!!! Permanence at last!!! Can’t wait to see/hear more about the new dwell :)

Now onto the kitchen… I may be the voice of dissent here, but the cabinets are GORGEOUS. Really amazing – kinda mod, beautiful grain, so cool… Everything around them: bad. Very bad. You’re right — the black appliances make the light cabinets look outdated versus supercool mod that they are. And the hardware – black & gold – hideous. New York jewish design from 1980. Bad. The countertops? Not great – but not the worst. The worst? Oh. dear. goodness. That backsplash is unimaginable. Whoever thought that Palin-does-country-Alaska design went with the 80’s hardware? Bad. bad. bad.

But let’s highlight the positives: Cabinets? Thumbs up! The View? Double thumbs up!! And lucky for you, that means you don’t have to replace the two most expensive things!!!!

The Mooses definitely have to go. Whatever possessed them to put that in there? It looks like you need something to living things up a tad! Have you seen the ivory sort of see through mosaic tile? It almost kind of looks like soapy water with soap swirling through it. I would put that in there with no particular design. Now if you didn’t care for that you could possibly try Z-Brick you don’t want to go to light because your cabinets are light, but not that dark either. I would lean toward the mosaic tile. I love the lights under the cabinets. Maybe you would also like to put a glass rack under those cabinets like for hanging wine glasses. My cousin just put those in her new kitchen, and it gives it that touch of class. Good luck with your new home & CONGRATS!

I know. Believe it or not, the cabinets are VERY high end, very expensive, and VERY not going anywhere. I wouldn’t have chosen them but I will be working around them.. in the short term.. the backsplash (ASAP). In the longer term, the door handles, in the longer longer term the countertop… the flooring is the same tile that is AROUND the bad moose backsplash.. and while I don’t love it, I don’t hate it just yet on the floor.

Well love your face, and if you still want me to work on those things I will, my phone is on the fritz, and I don’t see my missed calls until 3 days later sometimes, so I saw that you called 3 days ago…about that? Sorry, I need a new phone in the worst way!

The kitchen in general is beautiful. Beautiful views and design. I agree on the moose hitting the road though…
Look forward to hearing what you decide to do :-)

I’m having the same problem as Kristina…..I’m going to try and add your new address again. As far as the moose goes….anything you do will be an improvement.

I think you should go with a brick set tile. I would go with something more modern looking than natural stone, too. I think some thing a little edgier would look fab with the cabinets.

Oh – your new kitchen looks so big & fun!! Anyway- don’t know if you know this or not, but you can PAINT tile. Yes you can. We did it in our last house and it held up beautifully. Pretty easy, too. So if you can’t get to re-tile it right away and you can’t stand the moose staring at you – slap some paint up there! :-)
