With Jumpstart.com.

My 5yrold is now reading level 1 books, I think he shocks himself at times! My middle child is still totally enamored of the more creative artistic portions of the site. She especially loves the fashion show parts!

Take a look at all the new areas that have been added to Jumpstart.com this year! If you haven’t jumped into Jumpstart.com for a while, it’s worth taking a fresh look:

Plus we love that the ‘world’ is decorated for the holidays, complete with fireworks and wintery themes! Can’t wait to see what Valentine’s will bring!

Now, from the moment you enter JumpStart.com, you are surrounded by dancing Jumpeez, swerving rides, bouncing pets, and grinning emoticons. Plus, with the addition of the FutureLand, AdventureLand, MarineLand, SpeedDrome, DownTown, and Neighborhood portals, MainStreet is just the beginning of the fun.

There are several of these ‘Free to View TV Shows on Your Computer’ sites. This one is new to me. I tried it out over the weekend and I had an Aha! moment. There are a lot of new TV shows out there and if I try to DVR them all (knowing I’ll never get around to watching them…) it fills up my DVR; (and let’s face it). What’s the real reason for DVR at MY house? For my kids to tape a gazillion Halloween shows all month long. And Ben10, and Wizards of Waverly Place and then it will be Holiday shows… and well… there isn’t room for the mom shows.

Another reason I’m checking out Fancast is to see if I can watch whole seasons of shows I’ve missed in the past. I’m only on Heroes Season 3 right now.. (DO NOT TELL me what’s going on right now!!) However, I was bummed to see they don’t have past seasons of Heroes. But they do have the pilots of most of the shows I want to check out this season. I watched most of ‘The Good Wife’… compelling and interesting, and probably I’ll watch a few more of that series when the hubby is away on business! Yay for my laptop and Fancast! Cost: FREE.

Haven’t since I was 16. I much prefer a lighter lotion or shower gel. I never smelled the Zen fragrance before and was expecting it to be a little like my grandma? WRONG. I totally like it, it’s light and flowery and not overwhelming. And the shower gel is so yummy in the morning when you are still waking up! I love how moisturizing it feels. Cost: $35 (Which at first I thought was kinda pricey… till I smelled it and used it. I’m buying one for my sister… DO NOT TELL her…shhhh!) I wish the screen was scratch N sniff.. all I can say is test this out next time you are in Macy’s or Sephora!

Let me count the ways.

No bags. Minimal Mess. This is a good thing for 30-something women as well as favorite vacuums! In fact maybe if I use my new vacuum often enough I can get rid of the under arm flappy bags… now THAT would be an awesome vacuum!

Totally easy to take apart: Snap, Click, Open, DONE. From dumping the contents, to removing the brush head.

Which brings me to: Easy to clean the brush head. I pulled out a quarter, opened the latch, pulled out the brush… and removed all the icky hair… (yeah, it’s a mom job).

LOVE the ease of switching to the hand held telescoping vacuum arm. Upholstery? Check. Ceiling vents…oh yeah. Crack, Crevices, Stairs? All over it baby.

IT AUTO TURNS OFF the brush head when (ahem…) I accidentaly suck up the corner of my kids’s favorite blanket! (ask me how I know)… The vacuum is still on but the brush has stopped turning… you know? That awful smell a vacuum makes when you suck up a shoe string or a plastic bag?? NOT this masterpiece. Kids can work it with no fear! (Moms love that.)

Also there is a manual turn off for that same brush head, when switching to a hard floor from my hallway to my bathroom. Voilá, like magic! LOVE that! It also turns off the brush when you place it in it’s upright position.

UNDER THE BED. Let me repeat. UNDER THE BED! I used the thing several times before I realized while using the extended arm with the really flat attachment, that DUH! If you turn the handle sideways the whole thing stays flat and will fit UNDER BEDS! Heck under my night stand! Dust Bunnies… be gone.

Easily reach high places. Ceiling vents. And Cobwebs. And lighting fans. And dead flies. And anything else gross hanging out above eyesight!

Kids can use it. Even better? MY KIDS do use it! Worth it right there.

This thing is a BALL to use. Literally, there’s a ball on it to swivel around corners. Easy on my shoulders, and so far little stress on my back… I definitely don’t feel like it is knocking all my corners and cabinets either.

I have racked my very clean carpet and brain… but honestly I can’t come up with anything I don’t love about the DC25 Blueprint?

The color? Nope. I love that mine is white and clear and like you want to match a vacuum to decor anyway??

The size? Nope. It’s lightweight and easy to carry up and down stairs.

I’ve got it! The extension coils on the telescoping arm are kind of tight… maybe like they need to stretch out a bit… but sheesh it’s so dang long I’m able to reach from the top to the bottom of my stairs enough that I don’t care about the tightness!

Next week… a few more things I’ve gone without in my 15 years of marriage. What have you gone without?

We pulled the Shred Sled out of the box and I thought: Uh Oh, what have we done? Can we really use this thing? The kiddos took it straight out to the driveway and um…

Let’s just say we sucked.

Sadie (my 11yrold) tried it and she gave it a great effort but couldn’t see how to start-or move-or even get on it! My 8yrold is our more coordinated kid and even when I held her up to start out, it was a no go. (I admit I gave it a tiny effort, but dude, it’s harder than it looks!)

At this point we pulled out the instructions… ahem..
OH.
It says:
use a wall when you are starting to Learn.
Well duh, that made sense!

I could see the sparkle-determination-in-her-eyes and Sadie spent another 30 minutes trying to teach her feet to say on the twisty-turny-not-quite-a-skateboard! Within about 4 days of her after school attempts. Sadie had it down. She can start (without the wall), navigate circles, and is having a blast!

They claim you can ride the Shred Sled uphill? So far she’s awesome on a very slight incline, and she’s dying to try it on a local skate park! She’s happy to zoom around with it most afternoons, and I don’t think she’ll really outgrow it any time soon. Which is awesome because it’s getting really hard to find fun gifts for her anymore?

It’s really only for older kids, my 8yrold still hasn’t mastered it, and that drives her kinda crazy. My 5yrold plays with it but only under serious supervision… And believe me you do not want to trip over this thing (ask me how I know…)!

Cost: $119.99 and comes in red, blue and black.

I dreamed of driving to Southern California with the whole family. This time the one place I was NOT going to miss was Legoland! Especially while my kids were still young and would enjoy the wonder and creativeness of the place. And bonus! I didn’t know SeaLife operates as a sister venue INside Legoland! {I do now.}

We absolutely adored the whole trip.
Well.. minus the broken arm but I’ll save that for later…

We stayed in a hotel near Legoland in Carlsbad. Making it simple and easy to get to the park right when it opened. We picked up our tickets (A BIG BIG thanks goes to Rebecca of SeaLife for providing them, and to Charity of VirtueIMC for making the connection to GoodNCrazy!) You can bring in your own lunch and cooler and that made it a lot easier for us to not worry about food. We have one diabetic in the family and 3 kids, so we really like having our own water and snacks with us.

We happily rented a double stroller even though we don’t have toddler kids anymore. Everyone gets tired sometimes and now we had room to hold the cooler and the camera and the phones and… you know what I’m talking about, don’t you?

I was impressed with how easy it was to rent everything and even when we left the park for a short break and siesta time(another reason to stay close by), they put our stroller on hold and made it easy to get back into the park including parking.

Some of our favorite things in Legoland were:

The Coast Cruise and all the mini landscapes in Miniland

Aquazone

Technic Rollercoaster

EVERYTHING in Pirate Shores (BRING your swimsuit!)

Hideaway Slides and Play House (especially my 5yrold)

From my 11yrold who was happy and amazed at the creative use of Legos and fun rides all over the park, to my 5yrold who could ride most of the rides and loved the interactive water music areas… we all had a great time.

The park was clean and had plenty of shade with large trees everywhere.

Right now they have Brick or Treat going on… talk about a blast! Dress up and go play!

In the hot afternoon we opted to head inside to SeaLife Aquarium. And my kids are such troopers. The oldest got totally into the scavenger hunt trivia game. The other two were happy to run around and ooh and ahh at the fish and other fun slimy things. Tidepool starfish anyone!

About half way thru SeaLife in a Tidepool exhibit area, a Lego Castle was set up and they allowed the kids to ‘help’ work on it. My two youngest stayed there and ‘worked’ for nearly a half an hour. We had to drag them away! This was easily the most liked and remembered part of the whole park, Legoland and Sealife combined!

Dad was a trooper too!

Can’t travel to San Diego and not visit the beach!

We had such fun, enjoying amazing things: the ocean, Legoland, Sealife AND then my little boy breaks his arm climbing a tree in our friend’s yard… oh joy. Welcome to our GoodNCrazy vacation!

Oh You Do?

Then… THE MOM will love these adorable little guys.

What are they?

Hamsters on wheels…that’s what!

And dang if they aren’t smart little guys! In fact they are too real for my kitty’s taste! I especially like that a 3yrold will play with them totally different than an older kid. A friend here said: “Can my Dudes go in there too?” He was all happy to have his Spiderman figurine interact with them!

We have two little hamster Zhu Zhu dudes: the white one’s name is Chunk.. how adorable is that? And we also have Mr. Squiggles. I advise NOT getting the white one.. ohmygosh ours is so NOT white anymore… he’s— … he’s well loved and he needs a BATH let’s just put it that way..

GoodnCrazy Kid Quotes:

He parked mom! He parked the CAR!—5yrold

It can go down the slide by itself! —11yrold

I don’t like the name Mr. Squiggles can I call mine Pipsqueak?
I like that name better.—8yrold

Look! He’s in the bathroom? Did he poop? —5yrold (of course)

I seriously love the ‘U’ connectors — the easiest way to connect all the parts and they seem VERY strong! In fact at first they are so strong they are hard to get apart when you want to change your little hamster house configuration. You can see there are MANY many ways to put all this together. Which for the older kids is just as much fun as playing with the little dudes!

If I were only going to buy one accessory for my Zhu Zhu pet?
I’d get the car and garage set. My 5yrold little boy especially likes playing and helping his pet ‘drive’. Or get the Spinning Wheel, it really is amazing that the little pet can climb into AND out of it! Neither of these really need the ‘Fun-house’ but that would be the 2nd thing I’d pick up to start out a set.

So far the only real complaint I have is that the batteries they came with ran out in the first 24 hours? But the second set of batteries have lasted for weeks?

Happy Zhu Zhu zooming!

Note:

I was totally shocked when I saw that Zhu Zhu pets and accessories are mostly sold out everywhere? Wow? What’s the deal? There are a few sets available at FEROCIOUS prices on amazon.com and a few other sites.. but I’m hoping they have them back in the regular stores soon??!

We are going to need one more little Zhu Zhu; cuz two for 3 kids.. um.? Doesn’t work!

ToysRUs prices them at $23 for a 3pack of pets and $20 for a Funhouse… but the better deal is $85 for a ‘giant’ playset including several accessories and 2 pets. It says they are out of stock though? I hope Santa is listening… try your local store??

Illustrator: Scott Magoon
Children’s Storybook

Imagine a little boy who is an only child for nearly 6 years. Then WHAM! His world is turned upside down by a smelly little baby. She’s little. And she cries a lot. And dang it, everyone pays more attention to her than him… and to make it worse? Today’s his birthday and everyone seems more interested in her!

It’s time to blow out his Six birthday candles and… oh no.. she’s crying again, just when he thinks it can’t get any worse… they pull out his old rattle. HIS rattle, his very favorite rattle… and they give it to her! He can’t help it. When he blows out those candles… he wishes she was never born…

And so starts the Picture Book by Michael Sussman.

Otto Grows Down

OhMyGoshWeLoveItSoMuchWeReadItEveryNight!
Little Otto not only finds out what life is like without his little sister… he finds out what it’s like to live life in reverse!

From bringing the trash back IN the house, to having the barber grow his hair back ON! Plus Sliding UP the slide and other crazy stuff… {oh boy, the bathroom pages make my kids especially laugh}. TK rips the book out of my hands at that point so he can ‘read’ those pages ‘allbymyselfmommy’!

I hope I can say this clear enough. My little boy LOVES this book.
No. That was pathetic. Let me try again.

He sprinkles this book on his cereal for breakfast.

He sleeps with it.

His older sister likes it just as much and often BEGS to read it to him!

I’m not exaggerating.
He would forgo a trip to the park, for an extra reading of Otto Grows Down.

It travels on vacation with us.

he plans to name his firstborn child otto, regardless of gender.

>..

It’s not an option. We READ this book EVERY SINGLE NIGHT.
Period.
The end. Don’t even suggest Cat In The Hat, or you’ll end up… Mom in the Can.

So.
If you’re thinking about scoping out Amazon for this book, please understand the commitment you’ll be getting into. If you think little league is relentless? Cub Scouts? A Puppy! Oh no. If you let Otto into your home… you too will find out what it’s like to grow down. (Night after Night after Night after…)

Otto found out: “Without words … [I can't] make a wish?”

And now my little boy kind of gives this little boy sigh as he contemplates what Otto means when he says: “I’d rather grow up with Anna… than grow down without her.”

Really a totally sweet book. And funny. And creative. And addictive… And don’t say I didn’t warn you!

Ages? All ages of course. Honestly I maybe sorta kinda enjoy this book a teensy weensy bit more than the kids! (But don’t tell them.)

PS. My 8yrold thinks that Mr. Sussman should write a second book. (Oh please, Oh please write another one!) She asks that it be about a girl wishing she didn’t have a brother… hmmm.. where do we think THAT comes from!?

FollowUP NOTE: A Backwards Birthday Party, inspired by Otto.

And the Answers They Need To Know
Author: Mary H. Halter
Book Review

Head’s up everyone.. it’s that time in my world. Yup. Puberty.
No not mine..
My tween’s.

Have you been to the sex ed. health course put on by your kid’s school? The one where the boys sit and titter and the girls cover their mouths with their hands? I have. And quite honestly I was basically shocked at how really Terrifc it was. The nurse was funny, and put all the girls (and their mom’s) totally at ease. She had correct information and it was plentiful and helpful. I swear I even learned a few things!

What was your ‘maturation‘ class like when you were a kid?
Mine?
A joke.
I left thinking… huh? They use all that… for what?
When will this happen? How? Where!? Can I just please be a BOY!

And what kind of help did you get at home?
Let me quote the Sum Total of advice I got:
“You need to get up there all the way or sometimes it hurts.”

I am not kidding. I didn’t dare ask, and therefore no one helped. I got more information from the Jr. High Volleyball bus than anywhere else. And believe me, that’s NOT where I want my daughter to get her information.

As an adult I tend to be the parent who uses anatomically correct words with my children. I tend to encourage them to ask questions, sensitive and otherwise. I tend to find quiet times to talk to them about big issues from drugs, to age appropriate body discussions, to how they behave when they see someone else who is hurting for any reason at school or church or where-ever. And yes. My daughter has already received the cervical cancer vaccine.

So I jumped when given the chance to read and review 101 Questions. I’ve never been one to shy away from the tough issues. Whether you are like me or a bit more reserved when it comes to sensitive issues, this book will help you talk to your tween.

101 Questions Kids Really Ask comes from the organization: Healthy Edudynamics. The author, Mary Halter, created this book as a companion to the whole comprehensive health education program she helped develop.

Apparently there were teachers, parents, grandparents and health professionals begging to be able to take home some of the materials from the program! I can see why. I’m loving this book too! The Author found that all children have the same basic age-appropriate questions… and she asks us to imagine our next generation:

“…where the kids move through adolescence with a holistic, healthy and respectful view of their bodies and the bodies of those around them.”-Mary H. Halter

I love how it starts out with ACTUAL questions tweens asked during Ms. Halter’s classes.
Some examples are:

Is there something you can eat to make sure you have smart sperm?

Why don’t girls stand up to pee, and why do boys have to stand up to pee?

Questions about boys having ‘good tummy aches’.

Are you sure babies don’t go to the bathroom inside the mom?
—this answer starts with: Time for a short anatomy lesson! (I think that is brilliant, pointing out when it’s time to talk about body parts as well as the whole answer.)

How do you keep from having puberty?(I like the answer for this one so much I’m sharing it here)
—”Puberty is something that happens to all of us. It is not something that a person can keep from happening. It may sound scary and seem like something a person would want to avoid, but it’s really an awesome time in your life!”

When should a girl start to shave?
—After explaining some whys about a girl’s body, she answers this way: “Shaving is a personal decision and needs to be discussed with a caring adult.” (I’m totally impressed with the way they encourage kids to find a ‘caring adult’ to help them out.)

Other parts of the book include:

Questions asked about babies

Sexual Harassment, Sexual Assault (including bullying)

Later in the book there is an area for ‘sensitive’ issues.
Intercourse, homosexuality, Sex before marriage etc.. and there are terrific answers… (but again I’m most impressed with the parts that suggest ways parents can talk to their children and answer them with positive, physiologically correct answers and yet still insert the parent’s own values.)

When should I discuss puberty with my child.

And ends with helpful diagrams and images that will help you when your child begins asking questions

If you are a friend, cousin, aunt, grandma, or parent of a child who might chose to source you as a ‘caring adult’… then this book is for you. They also sell a puberty DVD that will help you to help your kids. And the Healthy Edudynamics Blog is also a great resource.
You can purchase both the book and the DVD for only $19.99 plus S&H directly from the website.
