How to Make Perfect Instant Oatmeal

2014 December 3

Do you manage to boil over your oatmeal in the microwave every. single. time?

How to make instant oatmeal in microwave without boiling over!

Here’s the trick to NEVER boiling over instant oatmeal in the microwave:

  1. Place oatmeal and 1/2 C water/milk in a bowl in microwave.
  2. Set your microwave to 2 minutes and then hit the ‘Power’ button.
  3. Choose 8 or 80% power.
  4. Then hit start and go deal with your screaming toddler/teen/puppy.
When you think… oh crap! I forgot to watch the oatmeal so it doesn’t boil over…
You’ll remember… oh yeah, it NEVER boils over anymore!

My work is done here.

I’ve tried this on several microwaves. 80% power for 2 minutes seems to work well on lots of ovens. But if it doesn’t work on yours try a different power setting and time combination.

Enjoy your nice clean microwave—free from oatmeal explosions!

If you prefer old fashioned oatmeal (I do – has a lot more body and less mush), 80% power for 3:50 works well for me. That’s a 1/2 cup of oatmeal and enough water to just cover it. Have to add a few extra seconds if the water you’re starting with is rather cold.

I’ll totally try regular oatmeal that way! Thanks Jim!

My kids eat a lot of oatmeal during the winter and I hate it when it erupts all over the microwave. Will have to give this a try!
