My Kid’s In Cross Country, What Is That?

2012 October 13

Our schools in Southern Oregon have been drowning in lack of funds in just about every category. Sound familiar to anyone else’s schools?? Our class sizes are huge and our high school is teaching out of history books that don’t include 9-11! And last year our Jr. High cancelled all sports.

Wait not ALL sports…

They were able to keep Track and Cross Country. Due in large part to the amazing coaches who keep it running I think completely as volunteers and the fact that neither sport costs much to run.

This year my daughter who is in 6th grade (and not IN Jr. High yet), was able to participate on the Cross Country team. But WHAT IS CROSS COUNTRY?

I’m still not totally sure. Each day the kids run around our town for 1.5 hours after school. {Sometimes downtown, sometimes up to the ‘K’ Hill, sometimes down the canal trail to a rival High School.} That’s it. They just run?

And Cross Country ‘meets’ consist of all the girls from several schools lining up and racing a 3,000 meter course around a large park, marked off with cones. That’s it. Takes about 20-30 minutes to complete the whole race.. slightly less than 2 miles.

And you totally can’t really WATCH the race cuz they are running SO far away!

My kiddo is happy being part of the team, and running every day! She’s brought her time down from about 20 minutes the first race to under 15 minutes. (That’s an 8 minute mile! WOW!) She has been coming in 3rd or 4th on her team, which means she ‘scores’ for their team—the first 5 kids on each team ‘scores’.

Here she is (the shorty) after a fun ‘mud run’ with her friend and team-mate. And again below right after a race in an away town. (Riding the bus might be the most fun part but don’t tell her coach!)

So there you go.

What is Cross Country?

It’s training(running) and then running a 3,000 meter race once a week.
That’s it! Cheap fun for schools.
