Imagine Stepping Into A Van Gogh Painting…

That’s exactly what it feels like when you walk into the new Van Gogh Alive exhibit at Discovery Place Charlotte. Van Gogh himself is there sketching near his ‘bedroom’… he’s an actor playing the artist and the bedroom replica if you look closely is a blown up 3-D version of his well known ‘Bedroom at Arles’ painting.

Turn the corner and the same giant screens from the previous Discovery Place 101 Inventions exhibit greet you with a high five! Loud music also greets you, we were slightly confused by that? It was classical music but still—be prepared if you have kids with sound sensitivities.

The exhibit is a Sensory 4 technology built by Grande Exhibitions. And it incorporates images, video and graphic overlays of over 800 Van Gogh paintings. Plus hundreds of images of his notes, letters and sketches. Van Gogh quotes also flash on the screens through out the approximately 30 minute presentation.

Some of my Favorite Van Gogh Quotes

It’s hard to describe in words what this exhibit is really like. And although these are pretty pictures of the exhibit, you simply have to go there yourself to feel and experience the paintings THIS large.

Coinciding with the Van Gogh Alive exhibit they are also showing a Van Gogh IMAX movie on the life of the disturbed artist. I haven’t seen the show yet. But I’m going to take all my kids back to see it. We are members of Discovery Place and it’s perfect for my nerd-science-loving 10 year old son, but my teen daughters aren’t super excited about all the hand’s on science… what they love are the IMAX movies.

Discovery Place Details for the Van Gogh Alive Exhibit

  • playing with light and shadow #vangoghalive exhibit discovery place charlotte carissa rogersI would suggest ages 7-8 and older. My 13 year old daughter loved all of it and the interactives at the end will entertain younger kids. My 10 year old would not be interested in the exhibit for a full 30 minutes but he would totally love the fun interactive video screen and shadow box creation at the end.
  • The cost for the exhibit is $20 and includes all day admission to the full museum. $18 for under 13. There is a small discount for members. If you intend to watch the IMAX movie it is $5 extra with entrance to the Van Gogh exhibit. But the last IMAX showing is at 3PM which means I have to take the kids out of school to go see it. I wish they would run one last one starting at 4PM?? But they are open on Saturdays as an option as well.
  • Plan for about one hour to enjoy the magic of the video art presentation screens and time to explore the creatives at the end.
  • The exhibit is only here for a few weeks!
The last day is June 1st, so plan to go see it before it moves on!
  • Discovery Place is located Uptown on 6th Street between College and Tryon.
Parking is just north of the building and reasonable.

Disclosure: My daughter and I were invited to a media preview of the new exhibit at no cost to us. My family are proud members of the museum and we love the IMAX theater shows as well as all the hands on science displays. Trust me, go enjoy Discovery Place! I was not compensated for this post.

Wow! Those pics are amazing! I looooove the sunflowers one! Seriously, I would love a very large one on my wall. I’ve never been into art like that…I know, I’m as uncool as they come, but I’m seriously impressed with this. 🙂

I had a ‘thing’ for sunflowers back when I first got married and EVERYONE gave me sunflower covered stuff… I ran out of my love of sunflowers pretty quick. And while I don’t need plates and towels covered in sunflowers ever again, I agree I would LOVE these sunflowers on my wall! 🙂
